Elixir Theatre Company is very proud to present Three Hours After Marriage by John Gay, at the Union Theatre. Better known for his classic Beggar’s Opera, which was later adapted by Brecht as The Threepenny Opera, Gay’s Three Hours is a masterpiece from a man at an early stage of his literary career.

Plotwell loves Susannah Townley. So does Underplot. But Doctor Fossile has secretly married her, and he is determined to keep attractive single men OUT of the house. Susannah has other plans. And when Fossile’s niece Phoebe, a dippy would-be writer, asks Plotwell to pretend he has written her play, the stage is set for jealousy, intrigue and increasingly surreal attempts at disguise…

Directed by Blanche McIntyre, this is only the second professional production of the play in nearly three centuries. It’s a fantastic chance to see a neglected classic, which enthralled London for a record-breaking run in 1717.
